Henner's Lydia by Marguerite de Angeli: The first children's picture book to portray Amish life.
Written and illustrated by Marguerite de Angeli. 1946, copyright. Junior Books - Doubleday & Co.
First published in 1936, Marguerite de Angeli's beautiful book was the first children's picture book to portray the everyday life of the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Henner is Lydia's father.
From the Kirkus Review:
"This is one of the outstanding books of the current season... A story of a little Amish girl who lives near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the Pennsylvania Dutch section. Lydia wants to be out and around, but something pricks her conscience into struggling through her first ""piece"" -- a hooked rug, and the prize promised her in the shape of a trip to market with her father."
The finely drawn color pictures, in charcoal and pen and ink, capture Amish life of the 1930s, and bring the children to life as they work and play. De Angeli lived near the Amish communities and visited them in their homes and schools.
As both a writer and illustrator, Marguerite de Angeli (1889 - 1987) is remembered for exploring sensitive issues through the lives of average people, shaped by her belief that everyone is deserving of consideration and respect. Another first, Bright April, published in 1946, was the first children’s book to explore racial prejudice. She also wrote about immigrants, such as Polish mine workers, and the physically handicapped, Mennonites, Quakers and the underground railroad, and life during the Great Depression.

The book was exactly as described, and she even included a hand-written note with advice on preserving it and offered to help me find a book conservator in my area (which I may in fact take her up on). It was an unexpected, lovely gesture.
