Humorist and "professional New Yorker" Fran Lebowitz and architect Michael Graves collaborate on Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas.
Written by Fran Lebowitz. Illustrated by Michael Graves. 1994, second printing. A Borzoi Book for Alfred A. Knopf, Random House.
Humorist and social commentator Fran Lebowitz has been called a "professional New Yorker", a perfect description of the writer of this children's book about the adventures of two seven year-olds growing up in an affluent New York apartment building.
Charles, a.k.a. Mr. Chas, and his friend and neighbor Lisa Sue live in a "big old apartment building" with a uniformed doorman, an elegantly furnished lobby, an elevator, and long hallways. They're precocious children, though Charles is the more annoying of the two, having an over-reliance on the dictionary to explain himself. However, they're also very resourceful, the kind of friends that are good to have. One day, Lisa Sue discovers a secret door in the kitchen pantry, and through the door and down a hallway two Giant Pandas named Pandemoniam and Don't Panda To Public Taste. The Chinese travelers had decided to lead regular lives as city Pandas. They were tired of living in the public spotlight. They'd heard that Paris was a pet-friendly city, so they planned to go there, disguised as dogs. The challenge for Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue is, How to get them there?
The late, great architect Michael Graves illustrated the book with black and white pencil sketches, including a perfect rendering of their apartment building.
