I've always wanted to learn to play mahjong, and now I'm more inspired!
Sisters Ginnie and Beth Lo grew up in Indiana and learned mahjong from their parents and aunt and uncle. Ginnie, a computer scientist, wrote the story. Beth, a ceramic arts professor, created the ceramic plates that illustrate the story.
"Some families play mahjong seriously, and talking is not allowed so the players can concentrate. Our family plays for fun, so the room is full of chatter and laughter, along with delicious Chinese snacks served with steaming hot glasses of green tea."
The story begins with their parents, Mama and Baba, and Auntie Helen and Uncle T. T., playing mahjong "morning, noon, and night". Beth's artwork captures the intimacy of their family life, with adults at the game table and kids watching, learning and eventually playing, or studying or horsing around.
As you turn the pages, the text is on the left and the illustrations are on the right. Each text page also has a word or phrase in Chinese charactors with English translation that's related to the activity in the illustration. "Games", "I win!", "The Double Dragon 17 Points".
The book concludes with a brief history of mahjong and a list of recommended books, and the endpages front and back show all the mahjong tiles.
Condition*: Fine/Near Fine. Signed on the front flyleaf. The dust jacket shows minor scuffing from normal shelf wear.
