Fox Eyes by Margaret Wise Brown. A first edition of the Weekly Reader version illustrated by Garth Williams.

Written by Margaret Wise Brown. Illustrated by Garth Williams. First edition thus, 1977. (First published in 1951.) Weekly Reader Children's Book Club. Pantheon Books, an imprint of Random House.

Margaret Wise Brown (1910 - 1952) was one of the most beloved children's book authors of all time. Sixty years after her death, we are still reading Goodnight Moon, The Runaway Bunny, Little Fur Family, The Dead Bird, Mister Dog, and many others.

Fox Eyes is about a sneaky red fox and the nervous creatures he spies on.

"There was once a spy, a red fox who came to spy on the opossums. There were five of them and they were supposed to be asleep."

But they weren't. They each had one eye open. They were playing possum. The fox noted all this and went on his way."

But with their one eye open the possums had seen the eye of the fox gleaming through the hole. They knew that the fox knew that they were playing possum. And that he had caught on to their tricks."

And so it was for a rabbit, a squirrel, a dog, a bear, a tree toad, and a group of children. All unnerved and kept up at night by the idea of the fox's spying, while the fox goes to sleep untroubled, because he's only doing what foxes do.

(Reading exercise: What's the difference between a possom and opossum?)

Weekly Reader chose Garth Williams (1912 - 1996) to illustrate this 1977 edition, and his beautiul work gives us a view of the fox eyes peaking through knot holes and crevaces, and the animals looking back from within their nests and lairs.

Williams was one of the most important children's book illustrators, and his work lives on in the Little House on The Prairie books, Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, and many more.

The fox is my favorite woodland animal. I work with children (Speech-Language Pathologist) and have found that by reading stories to small groups, and talking about them, I can address all of the children's individual speech issues. And thank you so much for taking the time to wrap the book for me (!!) especially this one, it made me feel like it truly was a gift to me, and it was! Best regards, Susan
