"We've got father and mother and each other," said Beth contentedly, from her corner.
So begins the post-Civil War story of the March sisters, first published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. The "little women" are girls forced to make mature decisions in the face of adult challenges: their father, a minister, is away from home serving in the Union army; their mother struggles daily to provide for them and still take care of those even less fortunate; the Marches' genteel poverty exposes them to class distinctions, as a family and individually; post-war society hovers between the past and the future, reflected in the choices the girls face as they reach maturity, between traditional domestic life and greater independence and career pursuits.
A timeless story of girls forced by circumstances to decide sooner rather than later who they are and what they want, and to also do what's best for others.
