The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas for the Illustrated Junior Library. The adventures of D'Artagnan and Athos, Porthos, and Aramis.
Written by Alexandre Dumas. Translated by Jacques Le Clercq. Illustrated by Norman Price and E. C. Van Swearingen. 1971 printing (first printing in 1953). Illustrated Junior Library, Grosset & Dunlap Publishers.
Dumas writes in the preface to the book: "About a year ago, while I was engaged in research in the Royal Library for my History of Louis XIV, I chanced upon a volume called The Memoirs of Monsieur d'Artagnan.... The title fascinated me...
In his Memoirs, Monsieur d'Artagnan relates that, on his first visit to Monsieur de Treville, Captain of His Majesty's Musketeers, he met in the antechamber three young men belonging to the illustrious corps in which he was soliciting the honor of enrolling. Their names were Athos, Porthos and Aramis."
I must confess these three foreign names struck me...From then on I knew no rest until I could find some trace in contemporaneous works of these three names which had aroused my passionate curiosity..."
Dumas found what he was looking for in the Memoirs of Monseiur le Comte de la Fere, and, with permission, simply reprinted the story of the three Musketeers.
This edition of The Three Musketeers is beautifully illustrated throughout. Norman Price, the original illustrator, died before his work for the book was finished, and the publishers contracted with E. C. Van Swearingen to complete it.
