They succeed and connect him to the Underground Railroad. On returning home for the holidays, he plans a party for Christmas Eve as a diversion while he sets his father's slaves free.
Haley became a subject of controversy over his authorship of Roots, but it awakened a new generation to the history of slavery in America, and our ongoing struggle with that history. A Different Kind of Christmas expresses a hope that every generation will strive to overcome the prejudices of the last one.
