First edition of Puppies by William Wegman, a beautiful, affectionate photographic essay on Wegman's Weimaraner puppies.

First there was Man Ray, Wegman's first Weimaraner, then Fay Ray. This book is about her puppies Battina, Chundo, and Crooky, and Crooky and Batty's puppies, and Batty's puppy Chip. (There's a geneology.)
"I didn't really want a puppy. I was too busy being an artist. But my wife did, so I promised her that when we got to California we would get one. I was hoping she would forget. It was a long drive to Los Angeles from Madison, where I had been teaching the art dearprtment of the University of Wisconsin, bt she didn't forget. When we arrived we decied to look for a dalmatian. We couldn't find one. Appparently there was a dalmatian shortage in 1970. Someone said weimaraners were good dogs. I had never hard of them.
"We chose our six-week-old weimaraner puppy from a litter in Long Beach, California. Sitter there in the dining room in a ray of light, he looked like a little old man. Except for a big case of chewy-itis, there was nothing puppylike about him. I named him Man Ray."
Wegman has written many children's books, including Wegmanology, also available at The Charmed Bookshop, in which he focuses his lens on Man Ray, Fay Ray, Battina, Chip, and Chundo.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's show, Before/On/After: William Wegman and California Conceptualism, runs from Jan 17 - July 15, 2018.
