First edition of N. C. Wyeth's Pilgrims by Robert San Souci tells of the early Americans' voyage on the Mayflower, their struggle to survive, and the lives of the Pilgrims and First People.
Written by Robert San Souci, illustrated by N. C. Wyeth. First edition, 1991. Chronicle Books, San Francisco.
N. C. Wyeth's rich, romantic paintings are the backdrop for Robert San Souci's story of the earliest American settlers' voyage across the Atlantic on the Mayflower and their struggle to survive in the New World.
"From the deck of the ship, the passengers gazed at a bleak landscape. Some of the sailors muttered that the palce was filled with wild beasts and wild men, called "indians". A few of the passengers talked of returning to Englad, but most were determined to stay and soon began to discuss what to do next.
"Because they had landed so far from their intended goal, Virginia, the Strangers felt that they should not have to ohonor their agtreement with the London merchants. But the Separatists argued that they should proceed as they had planned. Ultimately, the Strangers agreed, and together the two groups drafted an agreement, known as the "mayflower Compact", which set out the principles that would govern their settlement. From this point, the groups became so intermingled that all have become known as "Pilgrims"."
San Souci describes the settlers' harrowing difficulties during their first winter, and of their "First Encounter" with native people. Chief Samoset of the Pokanoket, Chief Massasoit, and Squanto and their tribes taught the settlers how to survive and thrive in the wilderness. In those early days, the Pilgrims and Native Americans learned to cooperate to live in peace.
Newell Convers Wyeth was the first of three generations of influential artists, most notably as the father of Andrew Wyeth and grandfather of Jamie Wyeth. As an illustrator, N. C. Wyeth, who studied under Howard Pyle, the father of American illustration, is best known for illustrating the Scribner Classics, including Treasure Island. As a painter of over 3,000 works, among his best known are the murals depicting the Pilgrims at Plymouth commissioned by Metropolitan Life Insurance.

Thank you for the quick service, and your lovely personal note. A couple of years ago I discovered that I am a descendant of a Mayflower Passenger - they are my 11th great-grandparents. One of the things I'd like to do before I leave this earth is to help my great-grandchildren know about and feel proud of those ancestors. This book will be just the right thing to add to our Thanksgiving celebrations, and then hopefully they'll pass it along to their own children. Your loving care is deeply appreciated.
