First edition of Ferryboat by Betsy and Giulio Maestro: Sights, sounds, and ways of crossing the Connecticut River on the historic Chester-Hadlyme Ferry.
Written and illustrated by Betsy and Giulio Maestro. 1986, signed, stated first edition, first printing. Thomas Y. Crowell, New York, publishers.
The story opens on a lovely watercolor view of sail boats on the Connecticut River and cars lining up to cross on the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry.
"If you want to cross the river at Chester, you have to take the ferry.
"All day long, the ferry goes back and forth, taking cars and trucks and people across the river. Toot! Toot! Here it comes!"
The pretty watercolor illustrations and simple text tell children how the ferry works, in sights, sounds, and easy to understand descriptions.
Betsy Maestro is a former teacher and she and her artist husband Guilio have collaborated on more than a hundred books, including the well-regarded American Story series.
