Gertie The Duck, the beloved mallard of Milwaukee, first edition by Nicholas P. Georgiady and Louis G. Romano, illustrated by Dagmar Wilson.
Written by Nicholas P. Georgiady and Louis G. Romano, illustrated by Dagmar Wilson. 1959, first edition thus. Follett Publishing Company. (The true first edition was published in 1945 by the Milwaukee Journal. Georgiady and Romano, Milwaukee teachers, published this second book in 1959.)
In 1945, in Milwaukee, a mother duck chose a 10' piling off the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge as a good spot to build a nest and lay her eggs. War-time Milwaukee was ready for a good news story, as the local papers knew all too well when the first headline read, "Mallard Sets an Eggs-Ample in a ‘Penthouse’ 10 Feet Up". The duck hatched six ducklings, too many to raise in a nest perched on a piling, and she relocated to a Gimbel's department store window, and then to Juneau Park. The Milwaukee Journal named her Gertie, and a bronze statue near the bridge commemmorates the beloved mother duck.
