The Golem - Barbara Rogasky - Trina Schart Hyman - Childrens Books, First Edition

Sorry, this item has sold.

The Golem by Barbara Rogasky and Caldecott Award-winning artist Trina Schart Hyman tells of the legendary clay or mud figure that is brought to life through an ancient Hebrew ritual.

Written by Barbara Rogasky, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman, 1996, First Edition, Holiday House.

Barbara Rogasky is author of the acclaimed book Smoke and Ashes: The Story of The Holocaust, and carries the same level of craftsmanship into The Golem.

Rogasky's Golem is based on the 16th C legend of the Golem of Prague, created and brought to life by Judah Loew ben Bezalel to protect the Jews of Prague from the pogroms and executions under Rudolf II.

Today, in modern Hebrew, a "golem" can refer to one who is dumb or helpless, deriving from the creation of a Golem to do one's bidding. But as all great folk tales, the Golem continues to occupy a significant place in Jewish history and religious life.

Trina Schart Hyman is a Caldicott Award-winning illustrator, and the artwork for The Golem is also brilliant.
