First edition of The Rooster's Horns by Hilary Beckett and Ed Young. A Chinese puppet play based on a favorite Chinese folktale. Comes with a pattern for a traditional Chinese shadow play featuring a worm, a dragon, and a rooster.

Written by Hilary Beckett, illustrated by Ed Young. 1978, first edition. Published by William Collins + World Publishing Company in cooperation with the U.S. Committee for UNICEF.

What a delightful book! It's a Storycraft book designed to give young people an authentic introduction to the cultural traditions of other children around the world.

From the dust jacket:

"For the play itself, Ed Young presents a funny folktale that is a favorite of Chinese children. Retold here in dialogue form for easy adaptation into a play, The Rooster's Horns is the story of a wily worm who coaches a dragon in flattery so that the dragon can trick the conceited rooster into giving him his beautiful horns. Adding drama to the story are the vibrant watercolor illustrations that glow against fan-shaped panels on each page. Rooster and Dragon are characters from the Chinese Calendar, which is described in a note at the end of the book."

The authors provide instructions for putting on a performance and crafting a simple stage, and provide patterns for making the puppets. These aren't paper cutouts. You can use tracing paper to make the patterns.

Ed Young is a beloved children's book author and illustrator. He was awarded the Caldecott Medal for Lon Po Po, and Caldecott Honors for The Emperor and The Kite and Three Blind Mice.

British author Hilary Beckett also wrote Rafael and The Raiders, My Brother, Angel, and Street Fair Summers.

Condition*: Near fine/very good. The dust jacket's matte finish paper shows scuffs from light shelf wear, and the top left corner has the beginnings of a tiny tear.
