Johannes Aysma (1636 - 1693), born in Amsterdam into the Reformed Church, was a theologian and scholar. "Ryck der Goden", one of two primary works for which he's known, explores the pantheon of pagan gods in the realm of "the one true" Christian God, writing from a Christian world view in an Enlightened, Copernican age. The book is also notable for the fine illustrations by Dutch master engraver Jan Luyken (1649 - 1712), which depict deities such as Juno, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Diana, and Neptune.
Signed on page 1 by "John Gebhard, Jr", possibly the son of Reverend Dr. John Gabriel Gebhard, long-time pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, New York from 1776 - 1826.

Condition: Poor. Disbound from original vellum cover. Text block is still square and tight. Missing front and back fly leaves, frontispiece, title page, table of contents, pages 567 - 569, 761 - 764, and index (Naamen, Woorden en Saaken). Tanning at the edges and foxing throughout. Exposed outer pages have small tears, creasing, and dog ears. Some small tears on interior pages, Dampstain along gutters from pages 740 - 760. Large tear at pg 611. Misnumbered pages: 444 should be 644; 736 is transposed to 375.
