Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776 - 1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and Gothic horror, as well as a jurist, composer, music critic, and artist. Born in Königsberg, Prussia, his narratives often explore the complex interplay between imagination and the darker sides of the human psyche, making him a pivotal figure in the Romantic movement. Hoffmann's stories provided the basis for Jacques Offenbach's opera The Tales of Hoffmann, where he is fictionalized as the protagonist. His novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King went on to inspire Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Nutcracker.
