Iktomi and the Ducks, a Plains Indian story by Paul Goble, 1990 first edition.

$28.00

Retold and illustrated by Paul Goble. First edition, 1990. Orchard Books.

"Iktomi was walking along...
Every story about Iktomi starts this way.

"Iktomi was walking along. He was looking for his horse. He wanted to ride it in the parade.

"I'm wearing my best clothes today," he thought to himself. "I'll look magnificent on my horse."

Iktomi always thinks he is so great.

"I'll lead the parade. Everybody will notice me. 'Look,' they'll say to their children, 'yonder rides our War Chief, the bravest of the brace,'"

"He thinks he is a chief, but we know he's not, don't we?"

Front Flap

"Iktomi, the trickster of Plains Indian folklore, lures innocent ducks off the pond with his tricks. He thinks he is going to have a fun meal of roast duck, but he does not take the wind and two trees into account, and in return is outsmarted by one coyote."

Paul Goble (1933 - 2017), a native of England and naturalized American citizen, admired and studied the history and culture of the Plains Indians. He first heard of Iktomi from Edgar Red Cloud, great-grandson of Chief Red Cloud, in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. His writing and artwork are appreciated for attention to detail in Native dress, traditions, and stories. Of many book awards, he received the Caldecott Medal for The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, and the Library of Congress Book of The Year for Star Boy.
