All the Saints of the City of Angels - Seeking the Soul of L.A. on Its Streets by J. Michael Walker, 2008 first edition.

$28.00

Written and illustrated by J. Michael Walker. First edition, 2008. Autry National Center. Heyday Books, Berkeley, California.

"When I embarked on this pilgrimage across the City of Los Angeles, the first significant saint-street I encountered was San Julian Street - which is wholly appropriate, because the original St. Julian, after years of wandering, offered his home as a refuge for pilgrims.

"Physically located along the southeastern rim of Downtown, Saint Julian Street also lies at the existential intersection of saintly legend and social reality, thereby providing a mythic matrix for the lives of society's dispossessed.

"San Julian provided me an introduction to a fellow habitue of his world, Santa Ynez. A young woman harangued by ill-suited suitors, she daily struggled (struggles still?) to maintain her dignity and her autonomy against great odds."

"Artist-author J. Michael Walker wandered L.A.'s many streets named after saints, uncovering their transcendent beauty. Combining meticulous research with artistic inspiration, Walker imaginatively depicts historical and contemporary Angelenos as their divine equivalents. Proud, defiant, and illuminative, these 'street-saints' reveal their own unique versions of sublimity and, in doing so, challenge traditional notions of what it means to bless and be blessed."

J. Michael Walker is an award-winning Los Angeles-based artist whose work encompasses painting, drawing, photography, and digital media. Born in the South during the era of segregation and raised amidst the Civil Rights Movement, Walker's life and art have been deeply influenced by the concepts of inequality and inclusion. His work has been recognized with fellowships, grants, and residencies, and shown in nearly 200 solo and international group art exhibitions.
