A young German botanist, sent by the Hamburg Botanical Garden to study Greek flora, encounters two English women. Their journey takes a dramatic turn when they are kidnapped by a band of brigands led by the notorious Hadgi-Stavros. The story explores themes of adventure, love, and the cultural perceptions of the time, and a glimpse into the complexities of mid-19th century Athens and the phenomenon of brigandry.
Edmond François Valentin About (1828 – 1885) was a French novelist, publicist and journalist, and a provocateur who was both admired and attacked. His works were often satirical, particularly against the clergy, exemplified in "Le Roi des Montagnes". Despite criticism of his work, including allegations of plagiarism, he remained a prolific writer.
The original owner's name, Margarete von Fragstein, wrote her name on the front fly leaf, dated 1892, and the Table of Contents in the back of the book.

Condition: Very Good. Lacks dust jacket, as issued. Quarter-bound cloth and marbleized paper cover boards: Light shelf wear with small scuff on the front; moderate wear to the edges; three small nicks in the binding; bumped at the corners. Light foxing on many pages else pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
