The Bridal Wreath

"Erlend came to evensong in the convent church every evening for a week without Kristin getting a chance to change a word with him. She felt as she thought a hawk must feel sitting chained to its perch with its hood over its eyes. Every word that had passed between them at their last meeting made her unhappy too - it should never have been like that. It was of no use to say to herself: it had come upon them so suddenly, they had hardly known what they said."

Sigrid Undset (1882 - 1945) was a Norwegian-Danish novelist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928 for her historical novels set in medieval Norway. She was born in Kalundborg, Denmark, in 1882, but moved to Norway with her family when she was two years old. Her father was an archaeologist who inspired her interest in Norwegian culture and history. She worked as a secretary for an engineering company for ten years before she married and started writing. Her early novels focused on the challenges of modern women in society, such as Jenny (1911). She converted to Catholicism in 1924 and explored religious themes in her later works. Her most famous work is Kristin Labransdatter (1920-22), a trilogy that follows the life of a woman from childhood to death in 14th-century Norway. She also wrote another historical saga, The Master of Hestviken (1925-27), and several novels about contemporary issues. She fled Norway during the Nazi occupation, during which she drew unwanted attention and her books were banned, and lived in the United States until 1945, then returned to Norway after the war.
