Chapter One
"The River Bank"

"The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring-cleaning his little home. First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders, and steps, and chairs, with a brush and a pail of whitewash; until he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes of whitewash all over his black fur, and an aching back and weary arms. Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and longing. It was small wonder, then, that he suddenly flung down his brush on the floor, said "Bother!" and "Oh blow!" and also "Hang spring-cleaning!" and bolted out of the house without even waiting to put on his coat."

Welcome to the tale of three riverbank creatures - Rat, Mole, and Badger - and their (mis)adventurous friend, Toad. It is Toad that takes them on a wild ride through the story, and for whom they gallantly fight to rout the slinky squatters of Toad Hall and take it back for dear Toad.

Kenneth Grahame (1859 - 1932) was a Scottish writer. Growing up in Berkshire in the care of his grandmother, he developed a love for the countryside and the River Thames, which would later inspire his most famous work, The Wind in the Willows (1908). This book, along with The Reluctant Dragon (1898), is a classic of children's literature, featuring animal characters with human traits and habits. Grahame worked at the Bank of England for most of his adult life, rising to the position of Secretary until he retired in 1908 due to ill health.

Helen Ward (1962 - ) is a British children's book illustrator and author. Ward received the first Walker Prize for Children’s Illustration, is a two-time winner of the British National Art Library Award, and was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2003.
