John Fox Jr. (1862 - 1919), born in Kentucky, was a journalist, novelist, and short story writer. His education at Harvard University laid the foundation for his literary career, which began with his work as a reporter in New York City. Fox's experiences as a war correspondent during the Spanish–American War - he served with the Rough Riders - and the Russo-Japanese War were woven into his fiction. His novels often depicted the vibrant life and complex social dynamics of Kentucky's Bluegrass region and the Appalachian Mountains. Blue-Grass and Rhododendron: Outdoors in Old Kentucky, published in 1901, is a collection of essays that offers a vivid portrayal of the customs and characters of southern Appalachia. Fox's works, including The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come and The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, achieved significant acclaim, the latter on the New York Times top ten list of bestselling novels for several years.

Condition: Very Good. Lacks dust jacket, as issued. Gilt-lettered brown cloth covers with green, red, and gilt decoration: Light wear along lower edge; on the back, small area at upper edge where cloth is puckering, though no signs of moisture damage; lightly bumped at corners and head and tail of the spine. Top-edge gilt. Name of previous owner on front fly leaf, dated 1902. She left a few dried leaves as bookmarks. Pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
