Edmund Spenser (1552 - 1599) was an English poet of the Elizabethan era, best known for his epic poem "The Faerie Queene". This masterful work, written in what is now known as the Spenserian stanza, is celebrated for its form and as an allegory praising the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I. Spenser's early career writing commissioned translations and poems lead to his seminal work, "The Shepheardes Calender", published in 1579. Spenser's life in Ireland influenced his later works, including "A View of the Present State of Ireland". His marriage to Elizabeth Boyle in 1594 was immortalized in his sonnet sequence "Amoretti".
The book's original owner was A. H. Plumb, member of a prominent Kansas family that in the 1920s donated their home, Plumb Place, to the YWCA as a home for women.

Condition: Very Good. Lacks dust jacket, as issued. Green cloth cover boards with gilt decoration: Light shelf wear; light wear along lower edge; lightly bumped at corners; small dampstain on the back, near the tail of the spine. Gilt top edge. Bookplate on front paste-down. Foxing on reverse of the frontispiece else pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
