Peter Rabbit was one of several characters in Thornton Burgess's popular Old Mother West Wind series, published from 1910 to the 1960s. In this story, Peter tries the name Cottontail on for size, but learns through his friends that Peter Rabbit is a fine name.
Beatrix Potter was the creator of Peter Rabbit, the character and the books, and the first to authorize merchandise based on her characters, beginning with a Peter Rabbit plush toy. But her British publisher, Frederick Warne, failed to establish US copyrights, which allowed others to borrow heavily from her work.
Thornton Burgess (1874 - 1965) was an American author and conservationist who dedicated his life to writing children's stories and promoting environmental awareness. Throughout his career, he wrote more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for his newspaper column, "Bedtime Stories." Burgess's tales often featured anthropomorphic animals and were set in idyllic natural settings like the Smiling Pool and the Old Briar Patch. Old Mother West Wind, his first children's book, introduced characters that would become staples in his works, such as Peter Rabbit and Jimmy Skunk.

Discrete name in top left corner of front paste-down. Small closed tear at lower edge of title page else pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
