Crunch: The Squirrel

"B-r-r-r- It's cold - it's very, very cold."

"That is what poor little Crunch, the squirrel, thought as he hopped through the big woods where the snow covered all the trees and bushes.

"It was so different from the summertime, when all the trees and bushes were covered with leaves and the birds fluttered and chattered among them.

"Where am I to live?" Crunch asked himself."

Front Flap

"Because this book was written by two little girls together we are letting them join in telling you about their happy-go-lucky hero and how they came to write his story."

"The story of how we wrote Crunch: The Squirrel is short and unusual. We were riding home from New York City on the subway train, discussing books, although we don't know why, when the idea came to us to write a book. At Jamaica we decided on a squirrel and the following day on Crunch. The book didn't take long to write and was fun all the way through..."

The girls made the local paper - The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sept 25, 1939 - when their book was published.

Kurt Wiese (1887 - 1974) was a German-born illustrator of more than 300 books and author of 20 children's books. His experiences in China, Australia, and Brazil enriched his illustrations, bringing a unique perspective to his works, such as the beloved "Bambi: A Life in the Woods" and the "Freddy the Pig" series. Wiese earned multiple awards, including Newbery and Caldecott Honors.
