Uarda: A Romance of Ancient Egypt by Georg Ebers, 1884 edition.

Written by Georg Ebbers. Translated from the German by Clara Bell. This edition published 1884. John B. Alden, Publisher. New York.

"In the winter of 1873, I spent some weeks in one of the tombs of the Necropolis of Thebes in order to study the monuments of that solemn city of the dead; and during my long rides in the silent desert, the germ was developed whence this book has since grown. ..."

Georg Ebers (1837 - 1898) was a German Egyptologist and novelist. Ebers is remembered for acquiring the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian medical document dating back to circa 1550 BCE, still one of the oldest and most significant medical papyri in existence. His novels were instrumental in introducing the public to Egyptology.

The gift inscription on the front fly leaf suggests the recipient was a trustee of the Inverary United Church in Ontario, Canada.
