"James Fenimore Cooper's classic American novel, The Last of the Mohicans (1826), was first published by Charles Scribner's Sons with N. C. Wyeth's magnificent illustrations in 1919. The original canvases have been newly photographs and reproduced with exceptional fidelity for this new edition.

"The second volume in Cooper's famed saga, The Leatherstocking Tales, The Last of the Mohicans remains a moving tale of adventure, treachery, and friendship in the battle-torn wilderness of eighteen-century upstate New York."

James Fenimore Cooper (1789 - 1851) is considered the first major American novelist. His most celebrated works are the Leatherstocking Tales: The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie. Cooper's narratives, rich in adventure and set against the backdrop of the American frontier, feature the iconic character Natty Bumppo. His writing career was influenced by his early years in Cooperstown, New York, and his service in the U.S. Navy.

Newell Convers Wyeth (1882 - 1945) was the father of Andrew Wyeth and grandfather of Jamie Wyeth. As an illustrator, N. C. Wyeth, who studied under Howard Pyle, the father of American illustration, is best known for illustrating the Scribner Classics, including Treasure Island. As a painter of over 3,000 works, among his best known are the murals depicting the Pilgrims at Plymouth commissioned by Metropolitan Life Insurance.
