Written by Marguerite Henry. Illustrated by Jacob Bates Abbott. First edition, 1942. M. A. Donohue & Co. New York.
A beautifully illustrated book about the family lives of birds.
Chapter One
Birds to the Rescue
"Birds are nearly always hunger - especially baby birds. Their appetites are as big as their mouths, and their parents never have to coax them to eat. Some nestlings eat as much as they weigh each day. That is why birds are important to farmers and gardeners, and to everyone who likes berry patches, green gardens, and fields of golden grain."
Marguerite Henry (1902 - 1997) was an award-winning American author of children's books featuring animals. Her works were marked by a deep passion for horses, such as the Newbery Medal-winning "King of the Wind", the beloved "Misty of Chincoteague", and Brighty of the Grand Canyon. Some of her books were adapted for film and TV and many are still in print.
Jacob Bates Abbott (1895 - 1950) was a distinguished illustrator whose artistic journey began early with winning a drawing contest and continued through his schooling and WW II until he found his calling as a wildlife illustrator. He was art director at Yankee Magazine, and his illustrations graced children's books like "The Story Road" and "Animal Babies," as well as numerous field guides for bird identification.
