"Driven by desperate instinct, I reach towards two patches of purple and orange light. I clap my hands together, driving the patches hard at each other. They smash together and create a blinding flash of purplish-orangey light. The instinct that told me to try this also tells me to close my eyes - quickly! When I look a few seconds later, the demons are down, screaming with pain and confusion, eyes melted in their sockets. I'm stunned by the power I've unleashed. Confidence comes flooding back. Once again I'm Kernel Fleck - defeater of the Demonata!"

In Demon Thief, the second book in the bestselling Demonata series, master of horror Darren Shan expands his terrifying universe by flashing back to introduce a new protagonist. The story follows Kernel Fleck, an ordinary boy who has always known he is fundamentally different from his peers. Kernel perceives reality through a bizarre lens, constantly spotting swirling, multi-colored patches of light floating aimlessly through the air. Unbeknownst to him, these luminescent fragments are the key to a volatile cosmic power—the building blocks of space and time.

Kernel's strange, passive observation shatters into a living nightmare when a portal suddenly tears open directly into a grotesque demon realm, unleashing horrific consequences that rip his family apart. Forced to embrace his latent abilities, Kernel learns that clapping these colored fragments together triggers a blinding flash of energy capable of melting demon eyes right in their sockets. Drafted into service as a powerful Disciple, he must step through the threshold of reality to hunt the viciously strong, shape-shifting Demonata forces in a brutal battle to the death.

Darren Shan (Darren O'Shaughnessy, 1972 – Present): Born in London, he moved to Limerick, Ireland, at a young age, where he developed a fascination with dark folklore, horror movies, and literary world-building. Celebrated for his ability to seamlessly blend stomach-churning thrills with deeply emotional, character-driven storytelling, his other prominent multivolume universes include The Demonata, Zom-B, Archibald Lox, and The Saga of Larten Crepsley.
