Always the Young Strangers by Carl Sandburg, 1953 first edition.

$95.00

Written by Carl Sandburg. First edition, 1953. Harcourt, Brace & Company. New York.

"I enjoyed the fury of the campaign, so much to laugh at or to cry over if you liked crying. One Chicago newspaper kept after [William Jennings Bryant] day on day calling him a 'Popocrat', half Populist and half Democrat, and I liked the fun of it. When they called him the Boy Orator of the Platte I saw that was all right. He was only thirty-five and if he had been a year younger he couldn't have run for President - and he sure was orator - and he came from Nebraska where the Platte River winds over the prairie. Even when they said his mind walk like the Platte River, 'a mile wide and only an inch deep,' I like it as being smart and funny. It would be some time I found it was half true."

Pulitzer Prize-Winning author Robert E. Sherwood reviewing the book for the New York Times: "At the risk of being convicted of hyperbole...I feel compelled to put my neck in the noose with the statement that 'Always the Young Strangers' is, to me, the best autobiography ever written by an American. ... The primary virtue of this book is its utter honesty. Sandburg seems to have written it not for the enlightenment or entertainment of others but for his own inward satisfaction. ...'

Sandburg writes of his life only through the age of 21, but it's more than just his story, it's the story of the country he loved, the endless variety of people who fascinated him, and the times in which they lived.

Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967) was a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, writer, and editor. Sandburg was born to Swedish immigrant parents and grew up in Galesburg, Illinois. To help support his family he worked various jobs, from driving a milk wagon to serving in the military during the Spanish-American War. His literary career took off with the publication of "Chicago Poems" in 1916, reflecting his connection to the city and its industrial vibrancy. Sandburg's extensive works include his famous biographies of Abraham Lincoln, "The Prairie Years" and "The War Years," and his collections of folk songs.
