Written by Rumer Godden. Second printing, December 1964. The Viking Press.
Front Flap
"Long out of print and now reissued for Rumer Godden's large new audience, this is the moving story of a lone Englishman who runs the Government Farm in the little town of Amorra, in the great plains of East Bengal, and of the strange things that happen there when his lovely, hated wife and two small daughters arrive from his violent and shadowy past.
"With their coming, a curious kind of bewitchment falls on the town. A spaniel belonging to one of the little girls dies, and yet comes back to frolic in the sun and to set strange whispers abroad by moonlight. Emotions are compressed to the point of explosion as the mirage of superstition, race passion, and terror grows and spreads."
Rumer Godden (1907 - 1998) was an English author of more than 60 books over six decades, including fiction, non-fiction, and children's literature. Born in England, Godden spent much of her childhood in colonial India, which became a pervasive backdrop in her storytelling. Her notable works include Black Narcissus and The River, both of which were adapted into films. Godden's writing often explored themes of cultural conflict and the experiences of Europeans in Asia. Her own life was as colorful as her novels, marked by a pioneering spirit and a return to England where she continued to write and live until her passing.
