Author: Rumer Godden
Genre: Literary Fiction / Psychological Drama / Anglo-Indian Literature
Edition: Second Printing (December 1964 Reissue Edition)
Publisher: The Viking Press
In Breakfast With the Nikolides, Rumer Godden weaves an atmospheric and psychologically tense story set amidst the sweeping plains of East Bengal. The story centers on Charles Pool, a solitary Englishman who runs a remote Government Farm in the quiet town of Amorra. His isolated, structured life is suddenly upended when his beautiful but estranged wife arrives unannounced from his shadowy past, bringing their two impressionable young daughters with her.
With the family’s arrival, a strange, lingering bewitchment settles over the local community. When a pet spaniel belonging to one of the little girls dies, rumors and superstitions ignite as the dog seemingly returns to frolic in the daytime sun and haunt the town under the moonlight. Godden expertly compresses human emotion to the breaking point, building a potent mirage of race passion, cultural division, and rising terror.
Author Rumer Godden (1907 - 1998): An English author of more than 60 books over six decades, including fiction, non-fiction, and children's literature. Born in England, Godden spent much of her childhood in colonial India, which became a pervasive backdrop in her storytelling. Her notable works include Black Narcissus and The River, both of which were adapted into films. Godden's writing often explored themes of cultural conflict and the experiences of Europeans in Asia. Her own life was as colorful as her novels, marked by a pioneering spirit and a return to England where she continued to write and live until her passing.
