Jean Ingelow (1820 - 1897) was an English poet and novelist who rose to prominence with the publication of her "Poems" in 1863, which captured the public's imagination and sold over 200,000 copies. Ingelow's work often explored themes of religious introspection and romantic love, conveyed with a tender emotional depth. Her narrative poem "The High Tide on the Coast of Lincolnshire, 1571" is particularly celebrated for its evocative language and emotional resonance. In addition to her poetry, Ingelow wrote several stories for children, including the popular "Mopsa the Fairy," which was reprinted in 1927 with illustrations by Dorothy P. Lathrop. Despite her success, Ingelow's popularity waned towards the end of her life.

Condition: Very Good. Lacks dust jacket, as issued. Gilt-lettered blue cloth covers: Loosening at the hinges; darkening of the spine, with several scattered small white spots, chipping at the head, and wear at the tail; lightly bumped at the corners. Gilt all edges. Name on front fly leaf dated 1870. Frontispiece, title page, and Dedication page are loose, and small tear on Poems page, else pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
