Written and illustrated by Mary Cokely Wood. Popular edition, eleventh printing, 1961. (Originally published 1951.) Charles E. Tuttle Company. Rutland, Vermont: Tokyo, Japan.
Preface
"The increasing interest in Japanese flower arrangement is the excuse for the appearance of this book. It is meant to be just an introduction to the simplest rules of the line and design arrangement termed Japanese Flower Art as I was taught it in Japan in the late [1890s] before westernization touched it. ...
"The illustrations are all taken from old flower maunals which have been a constant source of stimulus to myself and my friends. The line drawings are in the traditional black and white 'so that the eye is not distracted by color'. They are clear, authentic examples of fine arrangements collected by this or that school or individual over a period of many years. ..."
Mary Cokely Wood was associated with Ikebana International, an organization dedicated to the art of Japanese flower arrangement, or ikebana. This book is now part of the Mary Cokely Wood Collection: Ikebana International Materials at the National Agricultural Library.
