America Travels: The Story of a Hundred Years of Travel in America

Deborah Travels Along

"The most exciting thing that happened in Deborah's village was the arrival of the stagecoach, which stopped at the tavern to change horses. Sometimes Deborah's father took her down to the tavern to see the coach come in and to see the four tired horses give place to four that were fresh and prancing, eager to start on the journey. Then the coachman with his tall hat and broad red sash climbed into this seat, took the reins, flourished his whip, and off went the stagecoach with all its passengers. ..."

The stories tell of people's experiences as old modes of travel are succeeded by trains, planes, and automobiles.

Alice Dalgliesh (1893 - 1979) was a British-American educator, author, editor, and publisher. Dalgliesh wrote over 40 books, of which three were Newbery Medal runners-up: The Silver Pencil, The Bears on Hemlock Mountain, and The Courage of Sarah Noble. As the founding editor of Scribner's Children's Book Division, she shaped the landscape of children's publishing, championing new authors and illustrators. Among many other accomplishments, she was also the first president of the Children's Book Council.
