"Abantu ba cisheka amehlo" says the old story: "Their eyes were put out", so surprised were they at the magic they witnessed. The reader too will wonder at the unexpected poetical magic of the Bantu Folk Tales. The warrior's pride, the mother's loving care for her children, the sweet gentleness of young maidens - all these are mirrored in the stories. We meet too with many of the age-old themes of our own fairy tales, but all of them have here an unmistakably African character."
Jessie Hertslet was an author with a profound connection to Africa, as reflected in works such as "My roots went deep in Africa" and "Nompila, or, Sixty Years in Africa". Hertslet's family papers, including her health talks and questionnaires for Zulu schoolchildren, are preserved in the Campbell Collections at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
