"Travels into several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, first a surgeon, and then a Captain of several ships", was hailed by critics as a masterpiece and became an instant best seller when it was first published in 1726. People have been reading it for pleasure and for profit ever since. ...

"The text, prepared by Herbert Davis, is based on the 1735 edition, which contained Swift's corrections to the original.... The humor, which was too broad for some Victorian tastes, is hilarious today. Moreover, Swift's themes are still current. Psychologists, biologists, philosophers, and others continue to ask the question Gulliver's Travels posed: Is man a spoiled beast lost to instinct and unredeemed by reason? Equally relevant is the 'account of our affairs during the last century...a heap of conspiracies, rebellions, murders, massacres, revolutions, banishments, the very worst effects that avarice, faction, hypocrisy, perfidiousness, cruelty, rage, madness, hatred, envy, lust, malice, and ambition could produce."

Jonathan Swift (1667 - 1745) born in Dublin, Ireland, was a seminal writer and satirist, renowned for his sharp wit and biting social commentary. His most celebrated work, "Gulliver's Travels," is a keystone of English literature that has left an indelible mark on the genre of satire. Swift's career spanned various roles, including that of a clergyman, becoming the dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, and a political writer, where much of his work, including the famous "A Modest Proposal," was published under pseudonyms.
