Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882 - 1944) was a Dutch-American historian, journalist, and children's book author. He was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and immigrated to the United States in 1902 to study at Cornell University. He wrote and illustrated many books, including The Story of Mankind, which won the first Newbery Medal in 1922. He was also a correspondent for the Associated Press during the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War I.

Condition: Very Good/Good. Dust jacket: Unfolds into a map and historical timeline; wear along fore edges; on the front, small closed tears, upper left and lower right, small stain below title; on the back, light blue/gray rub-off near the top, light scuffing on the right side, chipping along upper and lower edges; corners are bumped; chipped at head and tail of the spine; with map opened, center crease is torn in the center with three small open tears; small closed tear at the lower edge. Red cloth cover boards with gold-embossed design on the front: Light fading on the front near head of the spine; edge wear at head and tail of the spine; splitting occurring at back paste down due to dryness, but hinge and spine are tight. Light edge darkening else pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
