Bambi's Children: The History of a Forest Family, a children's book by Felix Salten, 1939 first edition.

Written by Felix Salten. Translated by Barthold Fles. Illustrated by Erna Pinner. First edition, 1939. The Bobbs-Merill Company, Indianapolis and New York.

Chapter XIV

"In the fall, when frost snaps at the shrinking grass and leaves come fluttering from the trees in heraldry of red and brown and gold, the Courts of Chivalry return to the forest.

"Then it is that the Kings assert their regal rights, romaing the forest paths with challenge rumbling in their throats, their eyes agleam with glow of battle, their many-pointed antlers couched like lances at rest.

"Echoing these warlike cries, the honking geese arrive, their arrow-headed flight seeming to pierce the graying skies as though they were indeed the advance guard of the winter's storm."

In this sequel, Bambi, now the Prince of the Forest, introduces his twin fawns, Geno and Gurri. The story follows their growth from fawns to young adults, facing the inherent dangers of the wild and learning to navigate the complexities of their environment. The English translation of the book, while complete, has a gentler tone compared to the original German text, more suitable for children.

Felix Salten (1869-1945) was an Austrian writer and literary critic, remembered for his novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods. Born Siegmund Salzmann, son of a Jewish rabbi, in Pest, Austria-Hungary, he moved to Vienna with his family as a child and became part of the "Young Vienna" movement. He wrote plays, short stories, novels, travel books, and essay collections, as well as film scripts and operettas. He was also a prominent journalist and theater critic for several newspapers, and the president of the Austrian P.E.N. club from 1927 to 1933. Hitler banned his books in 1936 but Salten and his wife finally fled to Zurich after the Nazis annexed Austria two years later.
