That Pup, a book by Ellis Parker Butler, illustrated by Frederick Strothmann, 1908 edition.

Written by Ellis Parker Butler. Illustrated by Frederick Strothmann. First edition thus, 1908. (Story originally published in American Magazine.) A. L. Burt Company, New York.

Mr. Murchison in Iowa is sent a puppy all the way from New York, sender unknown. It's an adorable puppy. Mrs. Murchison names him Fluff. But over the first few months, Fluff grows into a large, ungainly dog, and he only gets larger, and less adorable. Mr. Murchison, a neighbor, and another friend spend inordinate time trying to figure what type of dog he is, and training him accordingly, until they give up, he's hopeless, and all agree he's got to go. But how?

Chapter I
The Education of Fluff

"Murchison, who lives next door to me, wants to get rid of a dog, and if you know of anyone who wants a dog I wish you would let Murchison know. Murchison doesn't need it. He is tired of dogs, anyway. That is just like Murchison. 'Way up in an enthusiasm one day and sick of it the next."
