Retold by Eleanor Graham based on the original story by J. M. Barrie. Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. First edition thus, 1962. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York.
Chapter One
The Shadow
"Peter Pan was a strange creature, a betwixt and between, neither one thing nor the other. He was certainly a fairy, though he had quite a spice of magic about him. He could fly like a bird, but was not a bird; and though he could swim like a fish and dive like a dolphin, no one ever took him for a water creature.
At one time he lived in Kensington Gardens, and he still went back there to play, but though the Darlings' nursery window looked right over the Gardens, and they were forever leaning out to see what they could see, for years the children never caught even a glimpse of him."
Front Flap:
"So begins one of the most enduring of all children's stories. The marvelous adventures of Peter Pan and the Darling children in Never-Never land have intrigued, excited and enchanted generations of young readers.
In this handsome new edition Eleanor Graham retells the story of the play. With grace and skill she has preserved the unique quality and spirit of Barrie's original work."
Eleanor Graham (1896 - 1984) was a book editor and children's book author. During WW II she became editor of children's books for Puffin Books, the children's imprint for Penguin.
Edward Ardizzone (1900-1979) was a British children's book illustrator. Of his many books, the Tim series won him the first Kate Greenaway Medal in 1956. He was also a print-maker and a member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
