Written and illustrated by Laurent de Brunhoff. First edition, 1987. Random House, New York.
"There was wonderful news in Celesteville. Celeste was going to have another baby! Babar was hoping for a little girl so there would be just as many girls as boys in their family."
Et Voila! Celeste births baby Isabelle, a healthy, happy, and adventurous baby elephant. As Isabelle grows, we celebrate a birthday and follow along as she explores the world around her, usually failing to tell her parents where she's going. One day she comes home with a cat, on another day she explores the Blue Valley and visits the home of family friends Boover, a dog, and Picardee, a camel. They play hide-and-seek and a game of poker, and she sits in as drummer in their jazz session, and they fly her home in a glider.
Babar came to life as a bedtime story told by Cecile de Brunhoff to her two children, Mathieu and Laurent. Her husband, Jean de Brunhoff (1899 – 1937), illustrated her story of the elephant who leaves the jungle for the city, and had it published by a family-owned publishing house. Originally credited to Jean and Cecile de Brunhoff, she had her name removed from the books. After Jean died in 1937 from tuberculosis, his brother Michel published Jean's last two books posthumously: Babar and His Children and Babar and Father Christmas. Jean's son Laurent helped with the artwork and grew up to be as talented an artist as his father, and the author and illustrator of Babar's Little Girl.
