Written by Lemony Snicket. Illustrated by Brett Helquist. First edition, 2006. HarperCollinsPublishers.
Chapter One
"If you have ever peeled an onion, then you know that the first thin, papery layer reveals another thin, papery layer, and that layer reveals another, and another, and before you know it you have hundreds of layers all over the kitchen table and thousands of tears in your eyes, sorry that you ever started peeling in the first place and wishing that you had left the onion alone to wither away on the shelf of the pantry while you went with your life, even if that meant never again enjoying the complicated and overwhelming taste of this strange and bitter vegetable.
"In this way, the story of the Baudelaire orphans is like an onion, and if you insist on reading each and every papery layer in A Series of Unfortunate Events, your only reward will be 170 chapters of misery in your library and countless tears in your eyes. ..."
The End is the thirteenth and final book in the series. The Baudelaire orphans find themselves stranded on a remote island with their nemesis Count Olaf, who is plotting to steal a mysterious sugar bowl that may hold the secret to the V.F.D. organization. The orphans must face a series of challenges, including a hostile island community, a deadly fungus, and a harpoon gun, as they try to uncover the truth about their parents' past and their own fate.
Lemony Snicket is the pseudonym of Daniel Handler (1970 - ), an American author best known for A Series of Unfortunate Events. Snicket has written a prequel series called All the Wrong Questions, which chronicles his childhood and apprenticeship in V.F.D. He's also written The Composer Is Dead, The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming, and 13 Words.
