Paper Boats
"Day by day I float my paper boats one by one down the running stream.
In big black letters I write my name on them and the name of the village where I live.
I hope that someone in some strange land will find them and know who I am.
I load my little boats with shiuli flowers from our garden, and hope that these blooms of the dawn will be carried safely to land in the night. ..."
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941), a Bengali born in Kolkata (previously Calcutta), started writing poetry at an early age and advanced to novels, short stories, plays, essays, and songs that reflected his humanistic and universalistic outlook. He was a pioneer of contextual modernism, a movement that sought to blend the best of the East and the West. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1913, for his collection Gitanjali. He founded Visva-Bharati University, a center of learning and cultural exchange, in Santiniketan. He was a social reformer who advocated for India's independence from Britain and women's emancipation and rural development.

Blue cloth covers: Gold title on the spine, gold design and title on front cover; top edge gilt; light fading, front and back; darkening along spine; light rubbing along lower and upper edges, fore edges, and spine. Inside: Name of original owner and date - Oct 1, 1919 - in pencil on front fly leaf, and name stamp of more recent owner in top right corner. Pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
