Author James Thurber (1894–1961): One of the most celebrated and influential American authors, playwrights, and cartoonists of the twentieth century. Best remembered for his iconic contributions to The New Yorker magazine, his sharp wit and whimsical, loose-line cartoons helped define the golden age of American humor. Throughout his legendary career, he penned nearly forty books, ranging from sophisticated satirical essays to beloved children's literary fantasies, including The White Deer, The Great Quillow, and the Caldecott Honor-winning Many Moons. Despite losing his eyesight during the 1950s due to a childhood injury, Thurber continued to craft imaginative books by dictating his intricate, auditory text to close friends and collaborators. Artist Marc Simont (1915–2013): A prolific, Paris-born American artist and political cartoonist who illustrated more than one hundred highly acclaimed books for children. The son of a notable Spanish magazine illustrator, Simont trained at the Académie Julian in Paris before settling in New York to study at the National Academy of Design. He won the prestigious 1957 Caldecott Medal for his vibrant illustrations in A Tree Is Nice, alongside earning two Caldecott Honors for The Happy Day (1950) and The Stray Dog (2002). A long-time neighbor and friend of James Thurber in Cornwall, Connecticut, Simont famously stepped in to illustrate Thurber’s later works after the author went blind, carefully describing his character designs out loud to ensure they matched the author's precise vision. He created the visual identity of the legendary boy detective series Nate the Great.
