In Rose in Bloom, the sequel to Eight Cousins, Rose Campbell returns to "Aunt Hill" after two years of traveling the world. Suddenly faced with prospects of marriage, she chooses instead to establish herself as an independent young woman. Rose also suspects some friends of liking her more for her money than for who she is.
Louisa May Alcott (1832 - 1888) was a formidable, if eccentric woman for her time, raised in respectable poverty in Concord, MA yet well-educated, along with her sisters, by strict but loving parents. The Alcotts were early participants in the Transcendentalist movement, along with Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Louisa was an Abolitionist and feminist, helped nurse wounded Union soldiers.
