Written Jacques Taravant. Translated from French by Nina Ignatowicz. Illustrated by Peter Sis. First American edition, 2001. Henry Holt & Company, New York.
The Little Wing Giver was written by Jacques Taravant, a French diplomat, who wrote the story for his small son.
"A long, long time ago when God had just created the world and when birds and bugs and butterflies didn't have wings, there lived a little boy. His nose was as round as a marble, and his cheeks softer than rose petals. His curly hair was black as night, and his eyes were bright as stars.
"He traveled over mountains and fields, through forests and meadows, and along every road and stream singing this song:
"Come get your wings.
Beautiful wings!
Come get your wings
And fly, fly, fly!"
The Little Wing Giver gives wings to "eagles and hummingbirds, ladybugs and vultures, parrots and sparrows." Then one day, having started to feel very tired, he lay down by a brook to rest, and fell into such a deep sleep the animals couldn't wake him. Finally, a magpie found two white dove wings in his pocket and when the birds attached them to his back, the Little Wing Giver flew up into the sky. God, witnessing it all, had a thought: Angels.
