Written by Clement Clarke Moore. Illustrated by Gennady Spirin. First edition, second printing, 2006. Marshall Cavendish Children.
"Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads,
And Mama in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
Away to the window I flew like a flash..."
And the rest we know and still can't get enough of since this story of wonder was first published on December 23, 1823.
Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) was a writer, scholar, and wealthy New York real estate developer. He graduated valedictorian from Columbia College (now University) in 1798 and earned his Master's degree there in 1801. He became a professor of Oriental and Greek literature, divinity and biblical learning at the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He is remembered for writing the Christmas poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas", also known as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas", which he published anonymously in 1823 and claimed authorship of in 1837.
Gennady Spirin (1948- ) is an award-winning Russian artist whose formal study and training are revealed in works that evoke medieval manuscripts and religious iconography. He's received four gold medals from the Society of Illustrators, the Golden Apple from the Bratislava International Biennial, the Grand Prix from the Barcelona International Biennial, and the first prize at the Bologna International Book Fair.
