"Silas Heap pulled his cloak tightly around him against the snow. It had been a long walk through the Forest, and he was chilled to the bone. But in his pockets he had the herbs that Galen, the Physik Woman, had given him for his new baby boy, Septimus, who had been born earlier that day."

Magyk stands as the monumental opening volume to the Septimus Heap universe. The narrative weaves a spellbinding, multigenerational mystery following the seventh son of a seventh son—stolen at birth and presumed dead—intertwining his lost destiny with a violet-eyed orphan girl discovered abandoned in the winter snow. Richly populated with quirky characters, archaic physics, dark forests, and intricate wizard towers, Sage crafts a vibrant world defined by its warmth, cleverness, and high adventure.

The physical allure of this 2005 first edition relies on the world-building artistic direction of Mark Zug. Zug does not merely illustrate chapters; he provides a tactile sense of place, framing the text blocks with custom cartography of the Marram Marshes and detailed graphite character silhouettes that feel like artifacts pulled directly from the Wizard Tower itself.

Angie Sage (1952 – Present) is a celebrated English children's author. Born in London, her early childhood spent growing up near the historic Thames and the wild coastlines of Kent deeply informed her affinity for ancient, watery landscapes. Sage achieved massive international success with Magyk, extending the universe across a seven-book core arc, The Magykal Papers supplement, and the TodHunter Moon sequel trilogy. Her rhythmic prose and inventive take on domestic magic have earned her a permanent place on contemporary fantasy shelves.

Mark Zug (1959 - Present) is an acclaimed contemporary American fantasy and science fiction illustrator. Influenced by classical artists like Frank Frazetta and the towering literary mythos of J.R.R. Tolkien, Zug’s artwork is defined by its atmospheric depth, intricate line details, and structural precision. Beyond his iconic visual identity for the Septimus Heap series, his expansive portfolio includes major design contributions to legendary franchises including Dune, Magic: The Gathering, Star Wars, and Dragonlance.
