$25.00

Chapter I

"The estate of Monteith belonged, in the year 1745, to a gentleman of that name, who in his domestic circumstances was truly happy. A marriage of affection had united him to a young lady of beauty, virtue, and good sense; and providence had blessed them with three lovely infants, to the care of whom the fond parents devoted a mutual and constant devotion."

Monteith, a supporter of the House of Stuart, and honor-bound to participate in the ill-fated Jacobite rebellion to place the Stuart prince on the British throne, was caught and imprisoned in Stirling Castle. Mrs. Montieth, with her three bonnie children, accompanied her husband to prison, a decision that ultimately cost the children both parents."

Lady Isabella Moncrieff (1775–1846) was a Scottish writer of books for children aimed at supporting their ethical upbringing, and romancing English readers with the Scottish countryside. After marrying Sir John Stoddart, Chief Justice of Malta, she wrote under the pen name of Martha Blackford, and eventually as Lady Stoddart.
