$45.00

Written by P.D. James. First American edition, 1986. Alfred A. Knopf.

An Adam Dalgliesh novel.

FRONT FLAP

"As the novel opens, two men lie dead in the vestry of a London church. One is Sir Paul Berowne - rich, cultivated, elegant; the other is an alcoholic tramp. Their brutal fate pulls Adam Dalgliesh into the quicksand of a case whose mysteries touch not only its victims and suspects but, ultimately, the investigators themselves."

P. D. James (1920-2014) was an English novelist and life peer, best known for her series of detective novels featuring Adam Dalgliesh, a police commander and poet. She was born in Oxford and educated at Cambridge High School for Girls, but left school at 16 due to financial difficulties. She worked in the National Health Service and the Police and Criminal Law Departments of the Home Office for more than three decades, drawing on her experience of bureaucracy and crime for her novels. She published her first novel, Cover Her Face, in 1962, and continued to write until shortly before her death in 2014.
