Front Flap -
"Lucy Farr is visiting a distant relative, Mr. Mudd. He lives in a wonderful house, full of interesting - and expensive - antiques. When Mr. Mudd gives her a beautiful ruby ring, Lucy is overjoyed. But, he says, it's far too valuable to be worn, and he puts it in a velvet box for safekeeping. Lucy can't help thinking, though: What good is a ring that can't be worn? What good are any of the things Mr. Mudd has, if they can't be used and enjoyed? When she decides to wear the ring anyway, both Lucy and Mr. Mudd discover what is truly valuable."
Carolyn Coman (1951 - ) has written novels, picture books, and short stories that explore themes such as family, identity, and resilience. Her books include What Jamie Saw, The Memory Bank, Many Stones, and Bee and Jacky. Among Coman's many awards and honors, What Jamie Saw was a Newbery Medal honor book and Many Stones was a Michael L. Printz Award honor book and National Book Award finalist.
Lance Hidy (1946 - ) is a graphic artist and educator. His many accomplishments range from designing posters and stamps, creating the Penumbra typeface for Adobe Systems, and designing Ansel Adams's last book, Yosemite and the Range of Light, to teaching college-level graphic design. Losing Things at Mr. Mudd's, the first children's picture book created on a computer, is the centerpiece of the Lance Hidy Collection at Yale University, his alma mater.
